NEPAL EARTHQUAKE
As the death toll has risen above 4,000, Nepal is trying to literally dig their way out of the horrific7.8 earthquake that occurred this past Saturday. Near the city of Kathmandu, rubble has replacedbuildings and people are buried under tons of debris. There is no sanitation, there’s no water andthere are no facilities for cooking. Many people are sleeping out in the open for fear of anotherearthquake such as the near 100 aftershocks, including one measuring magnitude of 6.7. Therehave not been enough beds in nearby hospitals and surgeons have set up an operating roominside a tent on the grounds of a medical college.
The quake is the worst to hit Nepal in at least 80 years. In 1934, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake virtually destroyed the cities of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan, leaving 8,500 people dead. This time, the death toll is expected to rise due to many remote Himalayan villages that have beencut off by landslides. In villages like these, it is not uncommon for entire communities of up to 1,000 people to be completely buried by rock falls. The only way to reach them is by helicopter, making the rescue efforts near impossible. Deaths reached to Nepal’s neighbors including 61 in India and 20 people in Tibet.
WME has always been in the midst of disaster relief and this time is not different. We will be sending funds to help this desperate situation and would ask you to take just a minute to be a part of our efforts. Nepal needs us. Will you help?
